This database was compiled by the Honourary Curator of the Marine Museum of the Great
Lakes at Kingston, the late Mr. Donald Page who was a shipbuilder of some 40 years
standing and a long term employee of Canada Steamship Lines. The list was
first compiled in a book format in 1985 for use in the Marine Museum Library
then transferred to an electronic format. This historical ship list is
restricted to vessels owned, or once owned, by Canada Steamship Lines. A more current list
can be found in the latest edition of Lloyds or by visiting the maritime commerce section
of the Web site at www.marmuseum.ca.
Since there are many ways to measure a ships length and tonnage this can lead to a high
degree of confusion, perhaps even arguments as to 'what number is correct'. In part to
alleviate that problem and to at least establish the context for this particular list we
have used as the first source of data the official registry information contained in the
Lloyds Registers followed by records found in the CSL Archival Collections (these at the
Marine Museum of the Great Lakes - see the finding aid).
Although we have done our best to eliminate 'typos' we welcome any corrections sent
along to the address below.
