Marine Museum Education Programs Grade K-3


Simple Machines: Pulleys and Gears Gr. 2, 4 - 70 min

Curriculum links: Grade 2 Technology: 2.3, 2.5 Grade 4 Technology: 1.1, 2.3, 2.4, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6

Identify, build, work! Students learn where we can find simple machines in our everyday life, create their own machines and even harness the power of these simple, yet effective devices have on our lives. All while on board an ice-breaker an in a historical shipbuilding site!


Seed Bombs: A guide to gardening warfare Gr. 3 - 70 min


Curriculum links: Grade 3 Science: Plants: 2.5, 3.1 Soils in the environment: 1.1, 2.1, 2.2 (components of soil), 2.5, 3.1

In this activity, students will mix their own soil from basic ingredients while learning about its structure and function. They will use this soil to create seed bombs, micro-environments that protect seeds and provide them with the nutrients needed to germinate. By the end, they should be able to describe some of the roles of plants in the environment and industry. Students will be able to take their seed bombs home to plant in their garden or other suitable location.


Artefact Investigation All grades - 45-60 min (can be adjusted as needed)


Go behind the scenes and discover the secret lives of historical artefacts! Learn about what an artefact is, how museums acquire them and how to properly handle and care for them. Students will be able to handle and analyze real museum artefacts.
