~ Built in 1889 - The Caisson ~
Dry-docked at the Metalcraft Marine Shipyard, Kingston, Ontario.

The Caisson is shown here with the inboard face on the right. The curve at the bottom matches the curved stone sill. Water pressure on the outboard face forces the bottom and sides of the gate against the drydock thus making a watertight seal.  Click here to see a drawing of the Caisson.

The Metalcraft Marine dry-dock is 200 feet long and located in the Kingston Inner Harbour. The Caisson was in the dry-dock for an inspection and repairs. Photographs by Jim Pritchard, May 1999
