The Latest News ~ Work in Progress
| The
conceptual design of the Reception Building is by Sandy Wilson, Architect, Kingston, Ont. Moving the Caisson - Bruce Muir Reports - this the result of months of preparation and the help of many volunteers. This includes a new drawing of the Caisson (drydock gate) |
Visitors to the Maritime Heritage Centre
will enter the Reception Building from the street level at the right. A highlight
for the visitor will be the Drydock Walk around and below the docked museum ship Alexander
Henry - but this poses some interesting challenges - among them making the Drydock Gate
tight and secure in order to keep Lake Ontario water out of the drydock. |
All through the summer and fall of 1998 teams of volunteers worked to prepare the gate so it could be moved to the Metalcraft Marine Drydock, a good location in Kingston to make repairs. First have a look at the gate as it appeared in the 1920s. |
