The Wallace list was compiled by the author andjournalist Frederick William Wallace and published in a "Record of Canadian Shipping: 1786 - 1920".
It is a very useful "first look" list that has the potential to lead you to
other sources of information.
In Mr. Wallace's words - "The list has been confined mainly to square-rigged vessels
of 500 tons and over. In a few instances this limit has been waived, particularly in the
case of vessels built prior to 1840. Up to that date, the details of regarding the largest
square-rigged vessels built since 1786 have been entered, as but very few craft were
constructed during that period to register more than 500 tons".
The usual caution about dimensions and tonnage. There are many ways to measure tonnage and
length and their recording was by no means consistent.
Your comments are of course welcome. The address of the museum will be found at
the top of the page.
